Very interesting! Can you remember the standard diet of Russians at that time? I've looked up current favourite Russian dishes and they seem heavy on the carbs and sugars (though probably no heavier than the 'standard Western diet').
I don't understand your point. They have a crappy dental system, so their teeth are not well taken care of? In the US, most people have had orthodontics, which you say is a huge problem. But, we also have better dental care, in general. I'm just confused.
Wow this is brilliant insight Ken! Absolutely brilliant.

a lot of pork, potatoes, grains (grechka), etc.
I dont think its any better/worse than the standard western diet

so.. it's that in Russia there is very little basic dental maintenance and they are quick to just pull a tooth out.
In the US... people will often go for checkups, get their teeth cleaned, get crowns/root canals to avoid pulling teeth, etc.
But yes.. then when you start doing ortho.. you are typically creating a far worse problem.
For example babushkas may not look great.. but they are usually quite functional/healthy and free of major disease till quite later in life.
Whereas people in the US that do ortho will start to have all kinds of functional issues earlier... despite the fact that they may not look as bad
