I have a feeling the best 'rehab' is these biomechanics
Because the body is amazing at healing itself.
The year was 1997. I’d just finished a study abroad semester at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
I was about to leave to go back to the US when my mother hit me with some shocking news. My Japanese aunt, who lives in Kyoto, had fallen down the stairs backwards and was now a quadriplegic.
She was only in her early 30’s and had two young daughters.
My mother asked if I could help their family out for a few weeks and take her to rehab. I gladly obliged, went to Japan on my way back from Australia, and would take her to and from her pool-based rehab sessions everyday for a few weeks.
She continued those sessions for many years afterwards and improved a little bit.
But I just visited Kyoto in October of last year to see my family and noticed that she was only marginally better than i had remembered her in 1997.
All of those thousands of hours of rehab and she was still totally dependent on a wheelchair.
I mentioned maybe she should try my Reviv (we’d just launched a month or so earlier), but she kind of laughed the idea off.
I didn’t push. But I probably should have.
Now let me explain.
What does traditional rehab look like?
I’d actually been prescribed rehab a number of times in my late 20’s and early 30’s because I was always tight in my neck and back.
So i’d go to a rehab facility that kind of looked like this one above and would have a list of things I would do. And there was often a person that would observe and help me a bit.
It did nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Was a complete waste of time and money.
But this is what modern day rehab looks like for folks that are healing from some kind of injury. And I have a feeling most people’s results do not differ significantly from mine.
I have a feeling the body is amazing at rehabilitating itself
I was having this discussion with my penpal, EGR, the other day.
His view was that the body can heal itself from almost anything if you have great biomechanics. Meaning you finished this biomechanical process to the ‘end’ and had your spine and skull in pretty much perfect condition.
An example he gave was that you could, for example, lose your hand and probably grow a new one. And that that type of regeneration capability is probably possible with our body, but the problem is that it is never able to demonstrate it because everyone is essentially in some state of collapse.
Even if you have good structure you are still in that slow state of collapse that we call ‘aging’.
So the question then becomes… when your biomechanics are improving each day with this mouthguard process just how good is it at healing itself?
And I have a feeling the answer to that question is “extremely good”.
With my evidence to that being that anytime I felt like I might get sick in the past five years, I did not. My body just took care of the threat and I kept chugging along.
What I think this means for rehab of the future
So my thesis here is that rehab in the future is basically going to consist of people sitting their ass on a chair or laying in bed wearing a mouthguard.
And then perhaps mixing in some subtle jaw-body stretches, which can also be done while sitting or laying down (ie. this is how I usually do it).
As well as some of the other things I mention as part of my ‘fast method’.
And that’s it!
No visits to the pool, or the gym, or anywhere else. No facilitator needed.
And yet this person’s recovery speed is likely going to be phenomenal.
They’re going to shut down all the rehab centers and layoff all the people in that space because they’re going to realize that it is just useless in comparison.
Closing thoughts
Imagine for a second that my aunt, who I talked about earlier, started wearing a mouthguard and in time was able to walk and function normal again.
That will sound crazy to people who have been a quadriplegic for an extended period of time.
And yet…. I have a feeling maybe it’s not that crazy.
Maybe we could have saved Christopher Reeve, who died in 2004 at age 52.
Maybe we can give folks a second chance?
Might I be wrong? Sure.
But is it worth testing?

Dear “Reviv” 🤓: Whenever I see a game-changing topic of interest related to biomechanics/anatomy/brain function/chiropractic care, I always forward on via email to my chiropractor, who I see instead of a doctor (his first major was in Mechanical Engineering; he went on to become a Chiropractor plus he is a 7th degree Black Belt in BJJ and Tae Kwon Do - he has special Jedi powers to me!). Anyway, he looked at your case studies and was just as amazed as I was! He’s looking further into your site and I told him that after having bite guard after bite guard made for me to prevent grinding my teeth to death AND BREAKING literally every single bite guard to date, that I would be his case study and talk to you more about purchasing a Reviv (updated version, I guess!) I have never had braces BUT had (unchecked) juvenile periodontal disease which was completely eradicated and reversed by my (then) employers while in graduate school for Clinical
Psychology. No crowns or orthodontics - my employers (an Oral Surgeon and a Periodontist plus their RDH’s) SAVED my teeth, my gums, my bite, everything as I had severe bone loss in three quadrants of my mouth. After 1.5 years of extensive work, my teeth and more importantly, my gums (and heart!) were restored!!! My wisdom teeth never came in, so I avoided that surgery. Needless to say, I am a fastidious oral health person and went from having 14 mm pockets (!!!) around my molar and premolar teeth to maintaining a healthy 4 mm pocket around the same teeth! About the bite guard - I can tell my L TMJ joint is off, which my chiro corrects as much as he can with aggressive pulse-point pressure, along with doing a complete head-to-toe adjustment as my right leg is 4 mm shorter than my left (this is genetic - my grandmother, mother, myself and my daughter all have the same issue) so I have been wearing quality ($$$$) inserts in all of my shoes to correct this deviation (X-rays also show this deviation). However - after biting through what would seem to be an unbreakable bite guard, I have managed to do this several times. Therefore, I would like to discuss more about the Reviv products AND, rest assured, I will be sharing the results with my chiro! 😊
